Disk is too slow or System Overload. () on MacPro – Logic Pro – Logic Pro Help

Logic Pro X system overload is a fairly common issue that most users will come across sooner or later. This is because Logic, being the powerful DAW it is, demands a lot of performance and processing power from your computer.
When your Mac is not able to meet these requirements while performing heavy tasks such as recording and playing back a large number of MIDI instruments, you get the error message. There are a few things that may give you a system overload on Logic Pro X. Most are related to the processing power of your computer and to the amount of information it has to process at a time. Here are some of the most common causes :. Similar to MIDI instruments, audio effect plugins can be very heavy to run, and an average project can easily have hundreds of effect instances.
You can improve your performance by using certain effects such as reverbs and delays as sends , which we will explain how to do further down the article. When you record external instruments , your computer must take care of a lot of stuff to make everything work seamlessly. We will explain what this configuration parameter is and how you can set it up correctly later in this article.
Plus, there are often processes running in the background such as software updaters and widgets that you may even not know about. As the Logic Pro X system overload issue is fairly common, solving and preventing it is pretty simple through some easy steps. In this app, you can see and close everything that is active on your computer, as well as filter it by RAM and CPU usage to help you find the most demanding processes. This is one of the best, most effective solutions to the system overload problem, as MIDI instruments take much more processing power than audio tracks.
Keep in mind though that this process is irreversible , so you might want to back up your project before doing it. Another great solution is increasing the buffer range. The buffer range determines how your Mac handles all the processes coming at it.
The only drawback is that a larger option such as samples will give you more latency when recording , but when just playing your project back and doing tasks such as composing and mixing , it will help Logic perform much better.
Few people know this, but leaving your track inputs assigned while not recording may drain lots of processing power from your Mac. It creates a snapshot of the region that is reversible so you can edit it later if you desire. A button with a snowflake will appear on the track : turn it on, press play, and Logic will start freezing its regions.

To insert a send on your track is simple: open the track inspecto r or the mixer view and then click on Sends. Expand the Bus section and you will see a list of the busses available: click on an empty one. You can insert the same send instance on multiple tracks. Even though Logic Pro lets you set your sample rate up to kHz , the smallest To change the sample rate of your project, click on File on the upper left corner of your screen, Project Settings, and then Audio.
There, you can expand the Sample Rate section and select your desired value. Alternatively, you could also store your projects on an external SSD and open them directly from it. This may unload your system a little bit. Do however keep a regular backup of your Logic files in any of the cases. Last but not least, if none of these solutions are giving you results, then you might have to invest in more RAM memory for your Mac.
These were our tips on how to solve the Logic Pro X system overload issue. Remember to apply these best practices not only when the problem pops up , but throughout your music making routine , so as to prevent it. Also, make sure to try every single step that you can take right away before investing in more RAM memory or on a new Mac computer.

One moment, please.Logic Pro X – Disk is too slow or System … – Apple Community
This is unusual because it is a overload message during recording of 16 raw audio tracks. There are no effects of software instruments involved. This should not be a strain on either the system or the hard drive.
I’ve done everything I can think of to troubleshoot. I tried all the Logic settings, I tried a different hard drive, I tried different cables and cleared 99 Gb of free memory on the system drive. I didn’t want to upgrade stuff because it was going so well up to that point but I eventually upgraded to El Capitan and the latest update of Logic as a final desperate attempt to solve the problem.
It didn’t. If anything El Capitan just gave me more headaches over other things on top of this headache with Logic. I’ve been through so much troubleshooting and that was the last thing I could think of. Since nothing on the computer appears to be doing anything.
I am beginning to suspect a problem either with the mixer or with Logic’s handling of it. Jun 23, PM. Something had to change, a system doesn’t just stop working after a year unless there’s a hardware problem or software was upgraded. Jun 24, AM. This already occurred to me for that exact reason: Stuff doesn’t just stop working suddenly. I was deliberately not doing any major updates so that I would avoid this so I was always disposed not to update.
I am kind of anti-update these days. The OS harasses us to update now, however. My iPhone comes on like a stalker. So I may have been annoyed into doing the occasional security updates.
The OS was 2 or 3 versions behind so my calculation would have been that most of the major updating was done already and the only thing left was security fixes and adding things like RAW support rather than changing core components.
I haven’t been able to line up dates though. Updating to El Captain and the latest Logic was the calculation that maybe some update I forgot about caused the problem and hopefully whatever it was had been identified and fixed by now since it was a couple OS versions down the pipeline by now.

Learn more about setting the Multithreading preference to optimize performance. Set automation preferences If your project doesn’t include automation, or the automation doesn’t need to be sample accurate, you can reduce the CPU load by turning off Sample Accurate Automation.
From the Sample Accurate Automation pop-up menu, choose Off. Choose the best sample rate for your project Projects with higher sample rates create larger audio files, which can increase the load on the CPU and disk. Use send effects When using CPU-intensive effect plug-ins such as reverbs and delays, you can reduce the load on the CPU by using send effects. Optimize software instruments Use these guidelines when working with software instruments: When mixing, make sure to select an Audio track or an External MIDI track, not a Software Instrument track.
Select a Software Instrument track only when you’re actively working on it. If your project includes Track Stacks, make sure no Software Instrument sub-tracks are selected.
Freeze tracks , especially tracks with a lot of plug-ins. Freezing Software Instrument tracks can increase the load on the disk, increasing the likelihood of encountering a system overload alert. Set the number of voices used in a software instrument to the lowest number required. For example, if you have a Sculpture track that plays only two simultaneous notes, you could set that instance of Sculpture to use two voices.
Disk Drive Speed: If you have a solid-state drive or a rpm or faster hard drive for your audio samples, choose Fast. If you are using a rpm drive for your audio samples, choose Medium. If your projects include a lot of audio tracks, select Average or Extensive. Optimize Alchemy You can also optimize Alchemy for improved performance.
